What is Camp4wheel?

Camp4wheel is a guided, off-grid, dispersed camping company. We offer professionally guided, vehicle-based camping trips through the stunning national and state forests of Northern Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan's Upper Peninsula.  Our experienced and certified guides will guide a caravan of campers along miles of forest roads & trails sharing their love for the outdoors while ensuring a safe and memorable experience for all adventurers.  Truly a one of a kind dispersed camping experience

Camp4wheel How it Works

How it Works

Camp4wheel trips are designed to give you access to remote places without the guesswork. You bring your vehicle and camping setup — we provide the route, leadership, safety and experience.

Trip Overview

  • Trips are 3–4 nights depending on the series selected

  • Small group, vehicle-supported travel

  • Dispersed, off-grid camping — no campgrounds or hookups

What you’re booking is:

a guided experience led by someone who knows how to safely access and navigate remote forest roads and camps

Vehicles & Setup

  • Your own vehicle is required

  • Rooftop tent recommended, but not required

  • 4WD recommended but not required for Nature, Campfire and Family Series

  • 4WD required for the Overland Series

 

   Your vehicle should be:

  • in good mechanical condition

  • Your spare tire should be up to maintenance and recovery jack and other items onboard

  • We recommend vehicles are inspected by a mechanic before arrival

What You Bring

  • Your own tent and sleeping gear including pillows

  • Your own food and means to cook or prepare it, this includes drinking water (5 gal or  more)

  • Your own electric cooler or standard cooler(ice packs vs ice recommended)

  • Serveware plates, bowels, fork, knives, spoons, cups

  • Your own toiletries, towels, sunscreen, bug spray, headlamps or flashlights

  • A dedicated trash receptacle, you must carry out all of your trash 

  • Your own power bank and means of charging

  • Appropriate clothing, swimsuits including  rain gear and cold weather gear.

  • Appropriate footwear including hiking boots, outdoor shoes and sandals

  • Your own camp chair, table, awning etc.

  • You are responsible for your own supplies for the duration of the trip

  • Plan to be fully self-sufficient

Meeting & Departure

  • Trips begin at a private staging area (Camp 4Wheel base)

  • Arrival time: ~3:00 PM on Day 1

We’ll start with:

  • trip overview

  • safety briefing

  • route expectations

  • radio (walkie-talkie) distribution

From there, we head out together as a group.

While on the Trail

  • You’ll travel as part of a guided convoy.

  • We use radios provided by your guide to stay connected at all times.

  • Daily routes are planned but flexible based on conditions.

  • Camps are dispersed and selected for privacy and safety.

  • Your guide will carry a portable outdoor toilet that will be set up at camp and have its own privacy tent and supply of tissue paper.

  • At camp you will prepare/cook your own meals and be responsible for carrying your own trash.

Safety & First Aid

  • Your guide is certified in Wilderness First Aid & CPR by National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS)

  • Guide carries extensive first aid and emergency equipment and is trained in evacution procedures

  • Group management and route decisions are handled by the guide who also is trained in monitoring weather conditions and taking appropriate measures to head off adverse weather conditions that may arise

  • All participants must follow safety instructions at all times

Camp Guidlelines

  • Propane fires only (no wood-burning fires)

  • Carrying additional gasoline containers is not allowed

  • Each camp vehicle should be self-sustaining packing out all trash

  • Guide will be in charge of providing a portable toilet/toilet tissue along with a privacy tent

  • Respect the land, wildlife, and other users

  • Groups follow "Leave No Trace" guidelines

  • Alcohol is not permitted on Family Series bookings

Important to Know

  • Your guide carries Guide & Outfitter Permits issued through the US Forest Service and State DNR that requires adherence to particular rules and regulations.

  • This is not a campground experience and is more physically intensive requiring frequent breaking down/setting up of camp and following a travel itinerary.  Rooftop tents make this process easier but are not required.  Your guide will provide an itinerary and will direct the day to day movements.

  • The tour will follow forest roads & trails staying off the beaten path. There are no amenities, hookups, or facilities unless there is a refuel stop.

  • Weather, road conditions, and terrain can vary.  Extreme weather conditions can affect decisions to continue or postpone journeys based on your guide's discretion.

  • Flexibility and a positive attitude are part of the experience.

Northwoods Series

Deep Nature Emersion

This all-ages series is focused on connecting with nature to provide a deep emersion into the Northwoods that you can't get from your run of the mill state campgrounds.  From sea to forest to sky, you will encounter scenery only the Northwoods offers.  Our guide will provide you with elaborate details about the natural world you encounter.  The pace of this series is steady and somewhat educational and itinerary focused. 

 

All participants must be 7 years of age or older.

Campfire Series

Adventure by Day.  Stories by the Fire into the Night.

Campfire Series is meant to provide an experience with less restrictions and more opportunities to make new friends and socialize with other like-minded explorers.  Campfire series is named for those long summer evenings around the campfire creating new bonds and sharing stories late into the night.   The pace of this series is upbeat, adventurous and itinerary focused.

 

All participants must be 18 years of age or older. 

Family Series

Fun for All

This all-ages series crafted with excitement for kids and adults of all ages, ensuring everyone can partake in the adventure. From swimming in beautiful clean lakes, fun campsite games, and bonding together under the stars with smores, the family tour package is sure to create lasting positive memories.  The pace of this series is relaxed and easy going.

 

No age restrictions.

Overland Series

4x4 Vehicles Required

A more adventurous tour for campers with 4x4 "rigs" looking to get dirty while exploring.  This booking is for campers yearning for technical trail time conquering obstacles to reach rustic destinations deep in the wilderness.  The pace of this series is adventurous and itinerary focused. 

All participants must be 16 years of age or older.
